[Old English torche, French torche a torch, rag, wisp, pad; probably from a derivative of Latin torquere, tortum, to twist, because twisted like a rope; compare French torcher to rub, wipe, Italian topcia a torch, torciare to wrap, twist, Old French torse a torse. Compare Torture.]
