[Old English slo, Anglo-Saxon slā; akin to Dutch slee, German schlehe, Old High German slēha, Danish slaaen, Swedish slån, perhaps originally, that which blunts the teeth, or sets them on edge (compare Slow); compare Lithuanian slywa a plum, Russ. sliva.]

(Botany) A small, bitter, wild European plum, the fruit of the blackthorn (Prunus spinosa); also, the tree itself.
