[Old English oinement, Old French oignement, from French oindre to anoint, Latin ungere, unguere; akin to Sanskrit añj, and to German anke (in Switzerland) butter. The first t in the English word is due to the influence of anoint. Compare Anoint, Unguent.]

That which serves to anoint; any soft unctuous substance used for smearing or anointing; an unguent.
