Hyssop

Hyssop , noun

[Old English hysope, ysope, Old French ysope, French hysope, hyssope, Latin hysopum, hyssopum, hyssopus, Greek {not transcribed}, {not transcribed}, an aromatic plant, from Hebrew ēsov.]

A plant (Hyssopus officinalis). The leaves have an aromatic smell, and a warm, pungent taste.

The hyssop of Scripture is supposed to be a species of caper (Capparis spinosa), but probably the name was used for several different plants.
