Halogen (hal"o*jen) , noun

(Chemistry) An electro-negative element or radical, which, by combination with a metal, forms a haloid salt; especially, chlorine, fluorine, bromine, and iodine; sometimes, also cyanogen. See Chlorine family, under Chlorine.
