Glacis , noun
[French glacis; -- so named from its smoothness. See Glacier.]
(Fortification) A gentle slope, or a smooth, gently sloping bank; especially (Fortification), that slope of earth which inclines from the covered way toward the exterior ground or country (see Illust. of Ravelin).
