[Old English gigawe, gugawe, gewgaude, prob. the same word as Old English givegove gewgaw, apparently a reduplicated form from Anglo-Saxon gifan to give; compare also French joujou plaything, and English gaud, n. See Give, and compare Giffgaff.]
