[Sanskrit bōdhisattva (perh. through Pali bōdhisattō); from bōdhi knowledge, enlightenment + sattva being, essence.]
(Buddhism) One who has reached the highest degree of saintship, so that in his next incarnation he will be a Buddha, or savior of the world.
