Aurochs
Aurochs (a"roks) , noun
[German auerochs, Old High German ūrohso; ūr (compare Anglo-Saxon ūr) + ohso ox, German ochs. Compare Owre, Ox.]
(Zoology) The European bison (Bison bonasus, or Bison Europaus), once widely distributed, but now nearly extinct, except where protected in the Lithuanian forests, and perhaps in the Caucasus. It is distinct from the Urus of Casar, with which it has often been confused.
